Another of Charleston County's sea islands, Wadmalaw is situated past Johns Island and above the resort areas of Kiawah and Seabrook. Maybank Highway is the main road through the area and the only way to access Wadmalaw by car. Extremely rural in character, the community is dominated by agriculture and home to the only functioning tea plantation in the United States. Strict building ordinances prohibit dense development, and the area is without the planned subdivisions common throughout the Charleston area.
