|Situated on the Upper Peninsula portion of downtown Charleston, the North Central neighborhood is located in an area once considered the outskirts of the city and consisting of farming, industrial and commercial properties. Since then, the long, narrow swath of land between Interstate 26, Rutledge Avenue and Mt. Pleasant and Congress Streets, has become an eclectic representation of late-19th- and early-20th-century Charleston. In 1887, the William Enston Home cottages were constructed to house senior citizens. Today, these homes serve as subsidized housing for moderate-income families. Situated around Maverick Street, another of the earliest developed pockets of the area was settled by members of Charleston's African American community from about 1900 to 1920. Approximately 250 homes on either side of King Street were developed from about 1912 to the 1930s.
